Using up my inheritance

Last night I mended my 10″ scope with some old elastic bands, to replace the perished O rings which hold the finder scope in the correct position.  (Trying not to make a very black NASA joke here.)

Then out to adjust and align, using the convenient Moon.  Of course addiction soon set in.  Saturn was too low for my duck-arsed Dobsonian to see over the hedge, so the 5″ came out for a low-power look.  The rings are now wide open; no wonder Galileo couldn’t understand what he was seeing.  It’s a most improbable object.

And then it was time to point my little camera down the eyepiece and see what could be done.  (Click an image to open the gallery)
