The point of doing all this is not immediately visible, as the yarn would have disgraced a twelve-year-old in the Good Old Days, and I am unlikely to get much better.  But, considering the many centuries when being a woman and being a spinster were equivalent terms, there is a certain sense of getting one’s joining card.

  1. That’s interesting. I have never thought about the origins of the term “spinster” before, so I’ve just spent a pleasant few minutes delving into the history.Your yarn looks pretty good to me, but I’m not a 12-year-old either.

    • Thank you! The yarn is a bit hard where I have over-spun it, and a bit fuzzy where I haven’t fed the fibres in smoothly, but I’m pretending it is character. It would always feel a bit harsh I think as I picked a rough wool to make it easier to spin for a beginner. Don’t know what to call it when it is wool – if it was clay I’d say it had tooth.
