Getting the winter duvet out of the attic makes you look at what is lurking in the spidery corners (apart from spiders). At the cost of some coughing and sneezing and arachnophobic horrors, I spent a couple of hours throwing out the past: old lecture notes, shabby clothes, board games with half the pieces lost.
But what to do with the nearly good curtains, which don’t fit any window I currently possess? Jolly curtains for little windows, enormous velvet curtains for enormous windows… will they ever hang again, or end up being thrown out next year or the year after? Or will I, like Scarlett O’Hara, make a new dress from the velvet if hard times come?
